We are proud to announce that towards the end of 2021, 3rd year student Josie Cheeseman was announced as the CIBSE Apprentice of the Year 2021. Josie is currently an Apprentice Building Services Design Engineer at WSP in London, working in the mechanical Team.

It is fantastic that LSBU Apprentices such as Josie are making such an impact at these early stages of their careers. We celebrate Josie's success and wish her well as she works towards completing her apprenticeship.

The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has recently approved a research funding application to support a part time PhD research program being undertaken at the BEA Acoustics Research Group.

The research aims to characterise the acoustics properties of alternative residential ventilation ducts.

The funding application written by PhD student Suzana Zekic and PhD director of studies Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina requested financial support to facilitate innovation in the research methods, ensure quality and wide applicability of the project outcomes. This grant further confirms the perceived value of the project and strengthens the link between CIBSE and the School of BEA.

LSBU apprentices made a clean sweep of the top three prizes presented in a new award by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the CIBSE Apprentice Award.

The ceremony took place on 8th October 2020. There were 24 nominations for the inaugural award and the three CIBSE Apprentice Award 2020 winners are:

  • CIBSE Apprentice of the Year – Megan May Whitbread, working at Troup Bywaters + Anders
  • CIBSE Apprentice of the Year First Runner Up – George James Field, working at chapmanbdsp
  • CIBSE Apprentice of the Year Second Runner Up – George Suddery, LSBU apprentice who is working at Hoare Lea.

BEA is a pioneer and a major player in apprenticeships. It is good to see our apprentices winning so many awards.

The School of BEA congratulates them all.

The School of BEA would like to extend our congratulations to the following students who have been awarded the CIBSE-Manly trust bursary for the year 2020 - 2021:

  1. James Joshua Tong - 2nd year BEng (Hons) Building Services Engineering
  2. Musab Mahmood - 2nd year BEng (Hon) Building Services Engineering
  3. Ismail Shobande - 2nd year BEng Building Services Engineering

The Manly Trust grants three bursaries per year to students at London South Bank University and is facilitated by CIBSE. The bursary, of £1650 per year, is awarded to an individual for the full duration of the study programme on which they are enrolled. The intention is that the bursary money should contribute to the costs of study, including travel and books, and that the recipient should contribute actively to the life of the Institution, for example, through regional activities, presentations, recruitment of new CIBSE members and writing reports.

A new working group has been formed to assist the development of new test methods to determine acoustic properties of ventilation ducts. The first meeting took place in December 2019 at the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Headquarters.
The working group has been created by Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, LSBU PhD candidate and Imtech engineer Suzana Zekic and the CIBSE head of research Dr Anastasia Mylona.
The group is formed at present by ten industry experts in building services noise and mechanical ventilation senior engineers. Some additional prominent consultants have also expressed interest in joining the group.
The first meeting was very well attended and was led by Luis and Suzana to a highly productive consultative session. It set the clear basis for a sustained and well-coordinated effort. It was encouraging to see the level of interest and engagement in the research work at hand. Our thanks go to all the group members who attended, those who have recently

A delegation from the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) came to LSBU on 18 Nov 2019 to meet and present CIBSE and its relevant industries to our HNC Building Services Students.

The visit organised by construction practice lecturer Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, involved meeting and networking with students as well as the delivery of an inspirational and motivational talk on the career prospects and opportunities in the concerned industry.

Valuable professional development advice was shared by a Fellow of CIBSE who is also Managing Principal of Elementa, a building services company with strong focus on the future of intelligent buildings. CIBSE membership routes and Engineering Council professional registration opportunities were also well expounded. The students showed clear interest in the themes being  presented, judging by the many questions posed and after talk discussions. Luis has planned to have the visit of CIBSE and Elementa again for next semesters f

Dr Alex Paurine, one of the Acting Heads of Division for Civil and Building Services Engineering was recently informed by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) that his team had won the Happold Brilliant Award for 2018/19. The Award recognises excellence in the teaching of building services engineering.

The panel were impressed by the high quality of graduates produced by the university and felt that the project topics studied by the students cover a wide range of building services areas and include sustainability and renewable systems. They commented that LSBU has excellent links with the industry through the advisory panel as well as LSBU staff being involved in knowledge transfer partnership schemes. They also acknowledged that students are supported by experienced, helpful and dedicated staff throughout their course.

The award comes in the form of an engraved crystal chalice and will be presented at the CIBSE President’s Award Dinner on Friday 11 October
