On 14 October, eight young engineers will go head-to-head to try to win the prestigious Graduate of the Year title. Each one will have a chance to impress the judges with a five-minute presentation on the question: ‘What challenges will engineers have to overcome to deliver sustainable and safe built environments for future generations?’

The CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year accolade, which has been running for more than 25 years, is one part of the Young Engineers Awards.

These also incorporate the CIBSE Apprentice of the Year award, which – for its second year – has been split into two categories: Technician Level 3-4 and Degree Level 5-7.

The CIBSE Employer of the Year award, now in its 14th year, is also part of the event, and the shortlist for these have been announced.

The School of BEA would like to congratulate our recent top Architectural Technology graduates who have been awarded the prestigious CIAT Outstanding Graduating Award and CIOB Certificate of Excellence (and prize money) for their amazing achievement.

The two graduating students with the awards are as follows:

• Anthony Withall - CIOB Certificate for Excellence

The graduates have worked very hard throughout the course and were extremely dedicated students. It's been a pleasure to work with the students and we are very proud of their achievements, especially during such a challenging time.

The School of BEA would like to offer its congratulations to Nelton Barbosa, (Level 07 Apprentice), who won the Runner Up prize as Employee of the Year at the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects Apprenticeship Awards. 

On 20 July 2021 a novel acoustics apprenticeship course (level 4) was validated at LSBU. This course implements the first ever apprenticeship in acoustics created in the UK. Its academic development was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in April 2021 progress resumed with the apprenticeship academic lead Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, and the rest of the academic team working hard to have the course validated in time before recruitment can commence in July 2021. The course residing at our School of BEA, is planned to start in September 2021. LSBU will be the first UK academic institution to run an acoustics apprenticeship course. Also, LSBU will be the only institution to run it in the next academic year 2021-22. Well done for this achievement and best wishes for the future of the course.

We are delighted to announce that Piotr Smiechowicz - a July 2019 graduate of the LSBU architecture programme - has been awarded a RIBA Silver Medal Commendation in the RIBA President's Medals international design competition; Piotr is a student of MArch: Master of Architecture Studio 23 (co-led by Professor Lilly Kudic and Luke Murray), and his project, which received this award is called MoonCatcher.   

The President's Medals is the oldest competition for students of architecture in the world, with a history spanning 185 years; it is considered to be both the most prestigious, and the most demanding competition in which to succeed, and we want to send Piotr congratulations on behalf of all the architecture team, the School of the Built Environment and Architecture, and LSBU as a whole.  This is a great achievement, and builds on the very strong record LSBU architecture has established for success in the President's Medals.

Leadership in the Construction Industry presents a new framework for leadership in the construction industry which draws from the authentic leadership construct. The framework has three major themes:

• self-leadership
• self-transcendent leadership
• sustainable leadership.

Despite its significance, leadership has not been given due importance in the construction industry as focus is placed on managerial functionalism. At the project level, even with the technological advances in the industry in recent years, construction is realised in the form of people undertaking distinct interdependent activities which require effective leadership. The industry faces many challenges including: demanding client requirements and project parameters; more stringent regulations, codes and systems; intense competition in the industry; and threats from disruptive enterprise. Professor John Ebohon, from the School of BEA, delivered a keynote speech at the joint event by Green Hub Africa, Nigerian Ministry of the Environment, and the United Nations World Environment Day 2021.

The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has recently approved a research funding application to support a part time PhD research program being undertaken at the BEA Acoustics Research Group.

The research aims to characterise the acoustics properties of alternative residential ventilation ducts.

The funding application written by PhD student Suzana Zekic and PhD director of studies Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina requested financial support to facilitate innovation in the research methods, ensure quality and wide applicability of the project outcomes. This grant further confirms the perceived value of the project and strengthens the link between CIBSE and the School of BEA.

A ventilation test rig designed to measure the acoustic characteristics of alternative ducts has arrived at the School of BEA Acoustics Lab. It has been kindly supplied by Imtech, the main partner and the sponsor company  of an ongoing industry collaborative PhD research with LSBU.

The rig will become the test bed for the development of innovative test procedures and the production of novel acoustic data for plastic and polystyrene ventilation ducts.

PhD director of studies Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina and PhD student Suzana Zekic inspected the rig and were very satisfied with the quality of components and final assembly.

The design, provision and installation of the rig marks the achievement of a fundamental milestone in the progress of this successful PhD research and reflects well on the high-quality research activities of our Centre.

LSBU- SBEA Doctoral Scholarship Programme

The School of the Built Environment and Architecture (SBEA) at the London South Bank University (LSBU) is one of the largest schools in its field in the UK. SBEA has recently sharpened its research focus. It has two research centres on: Civil and Building Services Engineering, and Integrated Delivery of the Built Environment; and two research groups on: Acoustics and Digital and Robotic Architecture. Its aim is to pursue world-leading research which has impact on national policies and governance, on practices in industry, and on the wellbeing of society.

The LSBU-SBEA Doctoral Scholarship Programme is pleased to offer two scholarships for PhD Studentships for September 2021.

Details of the scheme

1. The studentships are funded for 3 years and cover the tuition fees and a monthly stipend.
2. The studentships are available to UK and EU

On 4th March 2021 an online conference was held between the School of BEA Acoustics group and the world famous Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture. 45 students and academic staff from both institutions attended the afternoon event. The theme of the conference was Acoustics in Architecture, Architecture in Acoustics. The idea of a conference was formulated and developed by the director of Institute of Acoustics (IOA) courses at LSBU Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, in response to the impossibility this year to hold the face-to-face educational exchange events and site visits that both universities normally have in March. The aim of the conference was to improve the understanding of each other’s disciplines, enhance communication and promote collaborative work between acousticians and architects. 

The conference commenced with an introduction to the event in the virtual main room, aimed to set the scene and create a relaxed and participatory atmosphere. Then attendees calling in
